Feedback of tropical cyclones on El Niño diversity. Part II: possible mechanism and prediction

چکیده

Abstract Part I of this study has shown that the tropical cyclones (TCs) over western North Pacific (WNP) can affect El Niño diversity. In part, we further explore possible mechanism phenomenon: Compared with composite situation all months, when preceding (3 months earlier) accumulated cyclone energy (ACE) is strong, Walker circulation weakened and east–west thermocline gradient reduced. The eastward transport warm sea water enhanced, center maximum positive surface temperature (SST) anomalies located in equatorial eastern Pacific, supporting for development eastern-Pacific (EP) Niño. contrast, compared ACE weak, enhanced strengthened. Thus, SST limited to central central-Pacific (CP) modulation depth by WNP TCs mainly results from Kelvin wave propagation Ekman pumping. addition, are verified contribute prediction both phase-locking peak EP CP events rapid decrease during decaying period two types

El Niño prediction and predictability

El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is by far the most energetic, and at present also the most predictable, short-term fluctuation in the Earth’s climate system, though the limits of its predictability are still a subject of considerable debate. As a result of over two-decades of intensive observational, theoretical and modeling efforts, ENSO’s basic dynamics is now well understood and its pred...

El Niño and arboviral disease prediction.

Recent El Niño events have stimulated interest in the development of modeling techniques to forecast extremes of climate and related health events. Previous studies have documented associations between specific climate variables (particularly temperature and rainfall) and outbreaks of arboviral disease. In some countries, such diseases are sensitive to El Niño. Here we describe a climate-based ...

El Niño and health.

El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a climate event that originates in the Pacific Ocean but has wide-ranging consequences for weather around the world, and is especially associated with droughts and floods. The irregular occurrence of El Niño and La Niña events has implications for public health. On a global scale, the human effect of natural disasters increases during El Niño. The effect o...

Tropical Indian Ocean Influence on Northwest Pacific Tropical Cyclones in Summer Following Strong El Nino

In the summer following a strong El Nino, tropical cyclone (TC) number decreases over the Northwest (NW) Pacific despite little change in local sea surface temperature. Our analysis suggests El Nino-induced tropical Indian Ocean (TIO) warming as the cause. The TIO warming forces a warm tropospheric Kelvin wave that propagates into the western Pacific. Inducing surface divergence off the equator...
